CELL GUIDE CONTAINER ON SHIP
There are two methods for attaching cell guides for containers to a ship’s hull: welding them directly to the hull or attaching them in a detachable manner, such as with screwed connections or suspended structures.
The cell guides at transverse or longitudinal bulkheads need to be laterally supported by the bulkhead with horizontal web plates or other suitable elements to ensure proper alignment.
The vertical guide rails of cell guides are typically made of equal-sided steel angle bars. To withstand abrasion and local forces, such as those from container hoisting and lowering, the thickness of angle bars should be at least 12 mm. If the vertical guide rails consist of several steel angle bars, they must be connected to each other by horizontal web plates at least at the level of lateral supports and additionally between lateral supports depending on bending moments induced by containers due to random stowage of 8’6” and 9’6” high containers.
To ensure proper operation, the top ends of guide rails must be fitted with sufficiently strong guide heads according to operating conditions. To minimize the impact on fatigue strength of longitudinal hull structures, horizontal connections should be placed between the guide heads.
*Common types of damage*
There are two common types of damage that can occur to container guides: corrosion due to the oxidizing environment and abrasion from contact with containers during cargo handling, and damage to the guide bars from strong impacts with containers during cargo handling.
Damage to the guide rails can significantly impact the operating efficiency of a ship, as well as its balance and stability during cargo handling. Therefore, it is essential to repair any damage promptly.
Our company has extensive experience and expertise in ship repair at ports and can effectively address both types of damage with fast progress, high quality, and safety. We have successfully repaired damaged container guides for the Wanhai 165 at the Hai Phong wharf, and we have included some pictures of the repair process below:
