Main Engine Overhauling in Viet Nam
The main engine of a ship is like its heart, and just like a human heart, it requires maintenance to function smoothly. Any critical damage to the engine can lead to a significant loss of time and money, given that the main engine accounts for over 30% of the total machinery cost in the engine room. Therefore, it is crucial to keep the engine in good condition not just to comply with ISM, IMO, flag, and port state regulations, but also from a financial standpoint.
Onboard ships, it is the duty engineer’s responsibility to inspect and maintain the main engine. However, instead of overhauling the complete unit or engine at a time, different parts of the main engine are replaced and inspected based on their running time. This can range from daily inspections to inspections needed after 8000 hours of operation.
To ensure the smooth functioning of the main engine, daily checks and inspections are carried out. After 250 hours of operation, checks are carried out on the engine. After 1000 hours of operation, a more detailed inspection is performed, and checks are carried out on the cylinder liner, piston, fuel injection system, and turbocharger. After 2000 hours of operation, more in-depth checks are carried out on the engine, including checking the cylinder liner, piston, and piston rings. Maintenance and overhaul of the engine are done at 4000 hours of operation, while maintenance is performed at 8000 hours of operation.
Before delving into the inspections, checks, and maintenance work, it is essential to understand the key parts of the marine diesel engine and their functions.
The engine room is a crucial compartment on commercial vessels, housing the main propulsion engine and auxiliary engines for electrical power generation. At HAI HA M&S, we have extensive experience in overhauling both main and auxiliary engines on board these vessels. Our technical personnel are highly skilled and capable of overhauling any type of two or four-stroke diesel engines.
Our major tasks include overhauling pistons, cylinder covers, liners, and stuffing boxes (for 2 stroke engines). We also overhaul exhaust valve cages, fuel pumps, and fuel valves while performing adjustments as needed. Main and connecting rod bearings are overhauled, and we perform inspections on the crankshaft and camshaft. Crosshead bearings are overhauled as well, and we conduct sea trials to ensure the engine is functioning correctly after overhaul. We pride ourselves on our expertise and ability to provide comprehensive engine overhaul services to commercial vessels.
Performing the works mentioned above is essential for the sustainability of main and auxiliary engines. However, it is crucial to carry out these works in the shortest time possible to minimize financial impact. At HAI HA M&S, we understand the urgency of unexpected breakdowns and offer fast, tailored, and high-quality solutions to our customers. We also provide in-house developed services that prolong the lifetime of critical components.
