Construction from high tensile steel also allows for even thinner plate usage. To prevent corrosion, regular examination of hatch covers, hatch beams, and coamings is necessary to identify general levels of corrosion, localized corrosion at welded connections, cracks in joints and weld metal, permanent distortion of plating and stiffeners, indications of excessive corrosion, cracks in main structural joints, and missing or damaged hatch gaskets.

It is also important to keep hatch coaming tops clean and double drainage channels free of obstructions, replace missing or damaged hatch gaskets immediately, keep cleats and wedges in serviceable condition and correctly adjusted, test hydraulic oil regularly for contamination and deterioration, keep hydraulic systems oil-tight, and clean up oil spills. Regular maintenance of hatches is more effective and less expensive than sporadic inspection and major repair. With these measures in place, cargo wetting and other serious consequences can be prevented

When it comes to hatch covers, maintenance is key to prevent leakage and ensure weathertightness. Regular examination of the hatch covers, hatch beams, and coamings is essential to identify potential issues such as corrosion, cracks, and distortion. It’s important to replace missing or damaged hatch gaskets immediately and keep hatch coaming tops clean and double drainage channels free of obstructions.

Hatch covers are typically lightweight steel grillages, and modern design methods enable more efficient material distribution resulting in lighter structures. However, prevention of corrosion is still essential, as safety margins are finite. The use of high tensile steel enables even thinner plates to be used, but this also means that these structures must be handled with care.

In addition to regular examination and maintenance, hydraulic systems must be kept oil-tight, and hydraulic oil should be tested regularly for contamination and deterioration. In the event of an oil spill, it’s important to construct a save-all to contain the oil and empty it regularly.

Overall, continuing and regular maintenance of hatches is more effective and less expensive than sporadic inspection and major repairs. By taking a proactive approach to hatch cover maintenance, shipping companies can avoid the serious consequences of leaking hatches, such as cargo wetting, flooding, accelerated corrosion, or even loss of the ship.
